There have been some simple ‘hacks’ that I would like to share with you which have helped me during my time training with U.P.
These are things that I’ve changed in my life since taking the first step, the first being simply saying ‘yes’ to the challenge… because it is a challenge.
Time management has never been my strongest point, and my sometimes irregular hours and last-minute trips don’t help.
I’ve found the best way to build more time into my day is to get up earlier. If I manage to get some exercise done on my own in the morning before the world wakes up and starts sending me emails about work, it ticks off a lot of those 15,000 steps before my day even really starts. And there are zero interruptions because nobody is at work yet to be able to distract me!
I feel that mornings are so much easier since I have been doing these sessions at U.P. Getting cardio done first thing means that there is less chance of it not happening at all later on when your day gets too busy.
When I am at work, I’m sat at a desk in the BBC studios. It is very sedentary, so now I just make sure I think smart about journeys to and from work, or meetings, etc.
I often get off the tube several stops early now, or sometimes even walk home in the evening.
This is what once would have been “dead time” where you’re just sat on a train or in a cab, whereas now I will plan ahead and look at how long it will take me to walk using my phone’s map.
Since I have been feeling fitter and healthier, I feel more productive, much more creative, calmer and less stressed at work.

I also think it’s changed my personality a little. I feel more confident and outgoing, and I don’t hide behind black t-shirts anymore because I feel less self-conscious about my size.
Of course, you should always feel happy with yourself whatever size you are, but I just feel that for me, it was holding me back a little, and I’m glad I made this life change.
Exercise is now the number one thing on my daily ‘to do’ list, and I have U.P. to thank for that.
People ask if it is boring or hard, but I think I’m so used to it now that I cannot see a way where I wouldn’t prioritise it. The feeling you get physically and mentally is more than worth it, trust me.
