Obesity is a tragedy engulfing the lives of our children in greater and greater numbers.
It is the “worst possible start” in life for a child, says Nick Mitchell, Founder and CEO of Ultimate Performance.
Science shows us that for youngsters, the impact of obesity on brain development, cognitive function, blood pressure, self-esteem, and many other aspects of mental and physical health is stark.
This has grave ramifications for life – with a greater risk of diabetes, hypertension, cancer and a range of chronic health conditions in adulthood that can cut life expectancy short by up to 10 years.
As someone who has helped over 25,000+ clients transform their lives and long-term health by building lasting fitness and nutrition habits, Nick is a passionate agent for change.
When it comes to children, Nick understands more than most how critical it is to lay down strong foundations for health, exercise and good habits from an early age.
This has to start with parents. And it is within the power of parents to help give children the best start in life.
But as 40% of Year 6 children are now classed as obese or overweight, and more than half of six-year-olds fail to get enough exercise every day, are parents to blame?
Nick believes it’s more nuanced than simply pointing the finger at parents…
“Childhood obesity is like watching a car crash in slow motion.
The easy default reaction when looking at an obese child is to blame the parents. And it is very hard to say that that instinctive reaction is wrong.
“But childhood obesity is a tremendously complex topic that is far more complicated than merely overeating.
“However, the triggers for obesity – childhood obesity and adult obesity – are the same.
“But, I would speculate that childhood obesity is less about emotional eating. Less about hiding away from the world, burying yourself in food, and stressed eating.
“I would speculate that in more cases than with adults, childhood obesity really is just an overabundance of awful food. No one controlling how the child eats. No one educating the child and explaining to the child why they should eat in a healthy manner.
“Obesity needs to be addressed directly, and no one should ever try to say that it is ‘okay.’”
Why is obesity so much more damaging for your child?
Nick is so vehemently opposed to obesity because of the rampant devastation it can cause in all areas of a child’s life.
It’s not something we should ignore. Nor is it something that we should accept.
It has grave and lasting consequences that do not just carry through into adulthood, but echo down generations of families.
Nick believes that to stop this escalating cycle of obesity our children are victims of, we need to take a zero-tolerance approach.
“Childhood obesity is even worse than adult obesity because the children are still developing. So, if you are obese as a child, you are going to carry that hangover with you for the rest of your life.
“So if you’ve got an obese 14-year-old, who turns it around, they’ve still had critical developmental stages that are flawed because of what obesity does.
“What it does to their hormones, what it does to the new neurotransmitters, what it does to their body.
“We create fat cells up until we’re teenagers, and then usually (unless someone becomes obese as an adult) we keep the same amount of fat cells for the rest of our life. Those fat cells can get smaller or larger, but they don’t necessarily multiply.
“However, if you are obese as a child, you’ve got way more fat cells than somebody who is never obese, no matter what you do as an adult, right? So it gets harder and harder and harder for you.
“So my view: we should have zero tolerance on childhood obesity.
“If I’m honest with you. I view childhood obesity as a version of child abuse.”
Would you let your child drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes?
Obesity is a slow-burn emergency that needs to be addressed with honesty.
Nick’s experience helping transform the lives of thousands of clients the world over with “compassionate candour” bears this out.
But Nick says political correctness and putting “feelings before facts” is preventing us from tackling the problem head-on.
Nick compares obesity to drinking and smoking for children to hammer home the message…
“Now, we live in what’s called a “snowflake generation”. Everybody wants to be uber-woke and virtue signal. So no one wants to call this out.
“But, at heart, if your child is obese and you are doing nothing about it, how is that any different from seeing your child smoke cigarettes and not wanting to do anything about it?
“I think that would probably be considered child abuse.
“If you allowed your 12-year-old to smoke cigarettes, it’s against the law and considered child abuse, right?
“If your 12-year-old was downing six cans of lager every night, that would be considered child abuse, and the authorities would come in, right?
“Obesity is more complex, and the causes are more complex than “I’m going to swig six cans of beer”.
“But the health impact – it may be not as acute, it may be not as short term – but the health impacts are dire. The emotional impact is dire. The mental impact is dire.
“Again, we can break it down in lots of ways. Studies have now shown – proven categorically – that obese people have cognitive decline faster than anyone else.
“Your brain does not function as well when you are obese. So, if children are supposed to be sponges for learning, and your child is obese, what start are you giving your child?”
What control can you exercise to improve your child’s life?
Nobody understands the complexity of obesity more than Nick.
He has been at the coal face working with obese clients for over 15 years.
So he can see the struggles time-pressed mothers, single-parent families or those living on low incomes have in making health a priority.
As a parent, he is all too aware of the difficulties of encouraging children to eat well, spend time away from screens, and play outdoors.
With what’s at stake – your child’s future – it’s a battle always worth fighting in Nick’s eyes.
He argues we all have the power to exercise some degree of control over our children to shape their lives for the better.
“There’s always a caveat. There will be parents out there who are at their wits’ end. Their kid is overeating 10 packets of crisps day, and they feel they don’t know what to do.
“They might listen to my words and go, ‘how dare this person sit on his high horse and pontificate, and say I’m abusing my child. I love my child! I do everything for my child.’
“I would agree with them. It’s inflammatory language to call it ‘child abuse’.
“It’s not totally clear cut. If your child is sneaking off and getting 10 bags of crisps, what control can you exercise over your child?
“My 11-year-old daughter couldn’t go off and get 10 bags of crisps. If I had a 16-year-old son, or daughter who was obese, and you’ve got to give them pocket money, or they’ve got a side job, then it gets harder and harder.
“But the younger they are the more control we are supposed to exercise over our children. So, I’m afraid it’s down to the parents.
“Obesity is a socioeconomic problem as well. Someone is going to say: ‘I work two jobs. I’ve got no money. All I can afford is hyper-palatable, nutrient-light, junk food from the cheapest possible supermarkets.’
“You’ve got to have sympathy with them. You’ve got to provide them with education. There are government policies that one could examine to address the problem – subsidies for healthier food and higher taxes for unhealthier food – and to try to make things easier for people.
“But, ultimately your job as a parent is to set the platform for your child’s life.
“And, if you feel you’re in a position where you can’t look at what they eat, I would argue you need to reprioritise.”
Why we all need to lead by example…
Is education the answer? Nick thinks so.
But he argues that changing your child’s life can’t be achieved with soap-box lectures.
Children need strong role models. They need a path to follow – an exemplar to emulate.
Nick believes every parent has the power to lead by example and inspire change in their children.
Take control of your own health, and your children will follow.
“How do you educate a seven-year-old? If you’ve got an obese seven-year-old, it’s not about educating your kids. Education takes time, right?
“Does educating your child come through what you tell them to do, or what you show them and how you lead by example? Of course, it’s leading by example.
“Again, I have no statistics on this other than anecdotal observation, but I very, very strongly suspect obese parents are more likely to have obese children.
“I try to lead by example as a parent.
“There’ll be things I consume that are off the table for my children, or certainly off the table in anything but the smallest of quantities. And they know that. They’ve got those rules. They don’t kick back on those rules.
“I don’t take anything off the table. I don’t demonise anything. But they have boundaries.
“It’s the same with bedtime. Should your child have a bedtime? Or should your child be allowed to go to bed whenever they want?
“This is kind of the same principle. Children should have a bedtime, because regular sleep and regular hours is best for optimising their development. It’s the same with food.”
Why ‘inflammatory language’ can be the wake-up call we need…

Sometimes a wake-up call is exactly what we need to start afresh. Our children’s future depends on it.
“I don’t believe people do not have the understanding of how to eat healthily.
“Your grandma knew how to eat healthily.
“‘Eating from the land’ is eating healthily – home-cooked meals. Not eating ultra-processed, garbage food. Not eating fast food.
“I know it’s not so simple because people don’t have time. I know that, and I appreciate that. But instinctively, we all know how to eat healthily.
“So, it’s not a knowledge gap. By and large, you know how your child should be fed.
“We are not talking about feeding your child grass-fed fillet steaks.
“We’re talking about a sensible ‘everything in moderation’ approach.
“And a sensible ‘everything in moderation’ approach does not yield childhood obesity levels like we’re looking at today.
“I mean, you’ve got kids – 12-year-old kids – developing type 2 diabetes. This is f***ing horrendous.
“It’s unimaginably tragic just for the trajectory of those kids’ lives. It’s the worst possible start.
“That’s why using inflammatory language, like ‘this is child abuse’, maybe will hit home.”
