My Sessions at U.P. Are “Me” Time: Scott Mills’ Blog Week 18

I’ve always suffered from anxiety from a very early age and have spoken publicly about it on many occasions. It’s very easy to fall into bad habits when you feel low, eating the wrong foods and drinking too much alcohol.

The impact that my training at U.P. has had on my life outside the gym has been immense. The first thing this programme gives you is a real structure and discipline, which in my life where no two days are the same, has really helped. You sleep so much better, wake up fresher and feel so much more energetic through the day. The enormous sense of wellbeing is so worth the pain in the UP gym. And the chocolate protein shake you get after your session:))

I’ve also found my memory to be so much sharper, and as someone who finds it very hard to switch off at night, I’ve added in some mindfulness. There are so many apps (like Headspace for example, which I use) to make sure that when you go to bed, you’re not constantly thinking about work or where you’ve got to be next. It’s a bit of time for you.

I also find my sessions at U.P. are “me” time as well. Yes it’s incredibly challenging, but your phone goes in the locker and for that hour, 3 or 4 times a week – all you think about is your session, and your total focus is on the exercises you are doing. Everything else you just don’t think about, which I find great as it sets me up for the day. My team at Radio 1 have also said they truly think it’s helped my radio shows too – I feel much more like I’m firing on all cylinders when on air.

I also believe not eating bad foods makes you feel so much better. The meals I’m having from EatUP are very healthy (chicken, fish and veg-based).

When I was having a stressful time in the past, I would reach straight for the pizza! But this whole experience has taught me that doing that will make you feel worse. I do not miss that sluggish feeling that you get from fast food. It’s really made me realised how closely the mind and body are linked, and if you are reading this and maybe feeling a bit low or struggling – this is one of the best things you could ever do.
