I’ve never been this lean – my abs are showing!: Dani’s L.A. Training Blog Week 3

I feel different.

Being at this bodyweight is not new to me. I’ve cut weight for powerlifting competitions before, and even competed under 60kg a few years ago. Sure there was some dieting involved then, but it was primarily a ‘water cut’ so that I weighed in under 63kg. Getting shredded and lean has been a totally different ball game.

I feel petite.

I had no carbohydrates for the first two weeks, apart from fibrous vegetables. Plenty of eggs, red meat, fish, chicken, and all the green vegetables you can think of. Now that I’m more insulin sensitive, I get to reintroduce incremental amounts of healthy carbohydrates back into my diet.

Dani’s weight and body fat are dropping, but she’s still feeling strong under the bar.

Unsurprisingly, that is the meal I look forward to the MOST – all 40g of oats I get. I simmer them in hot water, pour a little bit of unsweetened almond milk on top, and add 50g of blueberries and a sprinkle of chocolate protein powder.

Berries have never tasted so sweet before, and carbohydrates have never been this filling before.

I’m becoming more mindful of my portion sizes, my taste buds seem to be more sensitive, and I’m learning to tell myself ‘okay, that’s enough food for now.’

I have the ability to put away quite a bit of food (trust me, I am a VERY good person to take to an all-you-can-eat buffet), and justify it by doing a little extra training the next day. But to get super lean and a solid stack of abs, this needs to change!

Preparing meals has been time-consuming, but I am enjoying the process of being in control of everything. I went through a few days of feeling lethargic and had a few nights where I didn’t sleep quite as much as I should have (because I was up late preparing meals), but I am back in action and feeling good.

Dani is loving seeing her abs and being the leanest she’s ever been in her life.

My clothes are fitting better and my skin is looking great (which is something I’ve had problems with ever since I was a teenager).

My abs are slowly starting to show, and my total body fat percentage is down to 9.8% from 14.7%! I’ve NEVER been this lean before!

Being smaller hasn’t taken its toll on my strength training yet. I can still squat 120kg for reps, even at 60.4kg, my bench press is still 84kg, and my deadlift is still strong at 140kg for reps. Psychologically, it’s been a bit of a challenge – my lifting belt feels a little looser, and I feel just that bit smaller under the bar. The other bit of the challenge has been doing more high-rep training, bodyweight work, and slowing down my tempo.

I’m not overly craving anything (apart from maybe a few special dishes from back home in Hong Kong), nor am I at risk of having a humongous cheat meal, but I do find myself planning what I’ll be having post-photoshoot.

I have the best of the best behind me with Ultimate Performance Los Angeles, and the team are helping me get to where I need to be. I can’t wait to see what the next few weeks bring, in the meantime, I just have to stick to the plan, trust the process and avoid the chocolate aisle in the supermarket.
